Treatment of IBS is based on the signs and symptoms shown by the patient. The treatment should be directed towards controlling various sings and symptoms or rather to say symptom specific. Therefore it is most essential that we communicate well our signs to our physician while taking history. Remember to detail everything that you have encountered during the period of discomfort.
In case of Diarrhoea: Generally a bulking agent along with loperamide will relieve the condition. Antispasmodics like mebeverine, dicyclomine, etc. may decrease the colic and bloating of the patient.
In constipation: An osmotic laxative like magnesium sulfate / lactulose, may help subside constipation. The affected patient may be advised to increase dietary fibre. If increased fibre intake worsens the condition of discomfort or bloating, the patient should restrict further intake of fibres.
In food intolerance: The patient should be advised to avoid such food stuffs and go for selective diet.
Other drugs used for treating IBS includes antidepressant, antacids, etc.
