(NOTE: Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition which commonly develops in the young adults and teenagers. Yet, it may affect people of any age.)Irritable Bowel Syndrome or commonly known as IBS among the Medical Professionals is one of the most common disorders that people across the globe complains about. It is a heterogenous group of abdominal symptoms for which no organic cause can be found. IBS is the common functional disorder of the GUT. It is a long standing (chronic) disorder which affects the digestive system, especially the intestines. Most of the causes may be because of the disorders of Intestinal Motility. The IBS covers a varied number of diseases causing intestinal discomfort.
Signs and Symptoms:
It causes abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and constipation leading to discomfort. Pain is not static and it may be intense and last for a while and go or it may come time and again. There is no fixed period for the repeatation of pain and it may come at irregular intervals. There may be an urge for bowel movements with a feeling of incomplete ecacuation (tenesmus) with a feeling of repeat movements. There may be bloating or distention of the abdoment, while in some other patients there may be severe constipations. The symptoms may vary from person to person. Similarly, the consistancy of the stool may vary to a great level from small & pellet like to watery or even there may be flakes of mucus along with the stool at times.
The symptoms may last for a longer duration or it may go in a short while. There are some associated symptoms too in this condition (IBS) which includes headache, nausea, tiredness, heartburn, irritable bladder, backache, muscle pain, belching, poor appetite, feeling quickly full after eating, and a feeling of discomfort most of the times.
REMEMBER: There may be person affected with IBS and not showing any of the symptoms at all. The symptoms may alter in a single person too.
